The Périgord is the world’s famous region where early stages of human life were found.
Alongside the Vézère river (ranked historical patrimony by UNESCO), 44 sites bestow to the EYZIES the title of pre-historical capital of the world.
Castles dating from the feudal & renaissance periods, countryseats, country houses, charterhouses, farm houses as well as fortified towns & churches, magnificently integrated in the landscape abound among exceptional vineyards and luxurious forests.
The area from Souillac to Limeuil is the nicest part of the Dordogne river. Rivers like the Vézère form very attractive valleys before flowing into the Dordogne. The skyline is pure and clear.

WEATHER:

In the summer, the weather is exceptional. During the evening you will certainly hear the warm concert of the crickets providing a delightful liveliness in the stillness of the night, while thousand of stars twinkle above your head.
May & June with its strangely hot days is the preferred period. More so, September & October for their misty mornings that quickly transform into marvelous, clear and sweet autumn days.

During the winter you will witness an exceptional festival of colours, dominated by a mix of russet, green and brown undergrowth carpet with its fragile tree fern that tends to turn pink at twilight. Nothing is grey or dull in this preserved “Perigourdine" nature

HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE:

In the Middle Ages, during the reign of the English kings, the Périgord has been the theatre of the “Hundred Year War" and a multitude of vestiges lend testimony to this period. More than 1000 castles or fortified towns that were build by the French as well as by the English will certainly wake up your curiosity. The best examples of these fortified towns are Monpazier and Domme.
The Perigord is also renowned for being the world’s centre of pre-history. The pre-historical man gave us the first treasures of European art such as the cave paintings of Lascaux (close to Montignac). Other exceptional caves like " Le Gouffre de Proumeyssac " and the cave of "The Grand Roc" will invite you to discover an incredible and surprising variety of natural structures going back millions of  years.

Abbey, fortresses, medieval cities, small villages with golden honey coloured houses or simple barns, you will discover that here old stones are not cold. Many old porches and wooden portals are hiding their secrets. The landscape is also scattered with typical pigeon’s shelters and "bories", those circular huts built from dry stones with a thatch roof.

GASTRONOMY AND WINES:

The Perigord being a rich agricultural region along the famous Bordeaux vineyards, this peace haven has also gained the reputation of being one of the major cradles of French gastronomy. To satisfy your palate cravings, you can enjoy the famed  "comfit", the “foie gras", the season's game, marvelous mushrooms, walnuts and all kinds of fruits, such as cherries, plums, peaches, pears and strawberries.

Few wines of the region are renown but the best ones are coming from the grapes of Bergerac and Cahors in the Lot valley. The mellow wine of the region is better known under the name of Monbazillac and is produced in the city of the same name, south of Bergerac.
Bordeaux's wine region is about an hour away by car.
The region’s liqueurs are distilled from walnuts, nuts and plums.
